2012 Drought second only to the Dust Bowl in severity

Posted on December 27, 2012

The last Drought Report of 2012 brought little relief for ranchers and farmers who have endured what federal meteorologists are now calling the worst U.S. drought, second only to the Dust Bowl of the 1930s.

The Drought Report said 62 percent of the Lower 48 are still experiencing moderate or severe drought, and these conditions look to continue through the New Year into 2013.

In areas from western Kansas through Texas and New Mexico, the drought might not let up until March, according to federal meteorologist David Unger in a Washington Post article.
