Vilsack says rural America is ready to talk about gun control

In the wake of the horrific Newton school shooting, agriculture secretary Tom Vilsack said rural America is ready to be part of the conversation on gun control.

In an interview on last Sunday’s “State of the Union,” Mr. Vilsack said that the tragedy in Connecticut has brought the debate over guns to “a different circumstance” and he hopes it could mean “potentially a unifying conversation.” At the same time, he acknowledged that President Obama must work from the “grassroots up” instead of just wrangling the laws in Washington–meaning he will need to respect the Second Amendment right to bear arms and the fact that 38 percent of Americans either hunt or fish.
