Beef production down, prices going up

IMG_5291American’s wallets will certainly be impacted if the expected 4.8 percent drop in beef production in 2013–the third largest year-over-year drop in over 35 years–occurs.

And if beef production decreases another 4.5 percent in 2014, as analysts predict, consumers will feel it even more.

Together, the two years of decrease would mean the largest percentage decrease in beef production since the late 1970’s.

Why the decrease? A combination of steady carcass weights and reduced slaughter, said Darrell Peel, a livestock marketing specialist at Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension.
